Yamaha Motor has set up a Motorcycle Research & Development unit in India. Yamaha has commenced development on a low-cost motorcycle, which it could export from India throughout the Southeast Asian region and other upcoming markets.
The development of this low-cost motorcycle is completely independent from the development of a 250 ~ 300cc (rumored to be the YZF-250 or YZF-300) semi-sportsbike which Yamaha Asia is currently testing in its end stage of its development. The news budget motorcycle will be a all-round do it all workhorse which would compete at the bottom end of the market.
The new Yamaha Motor Research & Development center in India will become Yamaha's second integrated development center after Thailand, and fifth Research & Development wing outside Japan, after Italy, Taiwan, China and Thailand. Yamaha will also set up another production facility at Chennai, India, to focus on developing low-cost scooters and other Asian specific models.
